As artists, our studio time is sacred. It’s the moment where our ideas, emotions, and experiences come together to shape the work we create. But have you ever thought about what you bring into the studio each day? I’m not talking about your art supplies. I’m talking about the emotions, distractions, and mental baggage that show up with you when you walk in the door.
I realized recently that whatever I bring with me into my creative space—whether it’s stress, joy, or even distractions—has a direct impact on my work. It shows up in the art I make, whether I like it or not.
If I walk into the studio carrying negativity or frustration, I can feel it interrupting my creative flow. That inner tension shows up in my work. But when I enter with joy, peace, and excitement, my art feels lighter, more connected, more me.
And it’s not just our emotions that we bring. It’s the news of the day, the politics of the world, and even the business side of things that creep into our studio time. If I let my phone follow me into the studio, I find myself checking it for any excuse—scrolling through social media, comparing myself to others, letting it steal away the precious moments I should be dedicating to my art.
We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of a creative breakthrough, but then your phone lights up. Just a “quick” check turns into five minutes... then ten... then you’re down a rabbit hole of distractions. Before you know it, you’ve lost the momentum you had going. Even stopping to take an Instagram pic or shoot a quick video interrupts your flow and pulls you out of the moment.
These distractions don’t just take away your time—they take away your energy, focus, and the quality of your work.
Here’s the thing: we can’t leave everything at the door. Life happens, and we need our human experiences to inform the art we create. But we can be more intentional about what we bring with us into the studio. We can decide to leave some of those distractions, worries, and pressures outside for a while.
So here’s my invitation to you: take a moment to think about what’s pulling you away from your best work. What’s distracting you from the creative flow you crave? Make a conscious decision today to leave those things out of the studio—just for one session—and see what difference it makes.
