What is your work about?

I believe my paintings are stories, energy or emotions that come through to the canvas. Some may resemble celestial bodies, but to me, they are a bigger understanding of the universe & our place within it. When someone states they felt a painting, or it provokes emotion, I know I successfully transmitted the energy. I tell people that I don’t know if my personal growth helped me with my art or if my art helped me with my personal growth. I think the answer is yes to both!

Do you have a studio routine, strategy or ritual that helps you get in the creative zone?

Since I transmit energy on to my paintings it’s hard to just go and paint. I feel I need to be in the true creative flow. Sometimes just allowing myself to “play” with materials helps. When I am ready to paint I smudge the studio and the materials I will be working with before I start a painting. I also work on numerous pieces at one time. When my inspiration comes, it’s like a portal has opened up.

How has the pandemic affected your art practice?

The pandemic has been hard for my creative process. Since it has been an emotional roller coaster, it has been hard to create from that space. I have used that time to do other art related things, like learn video editing and business skills.

What is your greatest reward, memory, accomplishment or proud moment as an artist?

I think my greatest reward is when someone tells me how much my paintings mean to them or have helped them. When people are truly touched by what I have created and they can express that to me it’s probably the best sign that I am doing what I am called to do.

What is one thing you MUST have in your studio?

I must have music while I paint! I have a special playlist of music that I like to listen to while I paint.

What would you tell your future self about being an artist right now?

I would tell my future self that I am glad I stuck with it and kept painting. That the ups and downs of life helped me portray the energy in my paintings for people to understand them.

How has the Art NXT Level Academy improve your art career?

I have learned so much through the Art NXT Level Academy! From social media, to marketing, to video editing and wellness. It has been a great investment for me. And as a bonus I have met some amazing artists from around the globe that I have developed friendships with.

What is the best art career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received has been to play. Have fun with painting. I believe that during play is when our creativity awakens and we come up with our best ideas.
