I wanted to take a moment to share a personal story with all of you. You see, I know firsthand the challenges that many artists face when it comes to living with illnesses, diseases, or other conditions that can impact our ability to create. For me, it's been a 16-year journey of grappling with vertigo – an inner ear malfunction that sends my world into a spin from time to time. It's a condition that comes and goes in seasons, and unfortunately, I find myself in the midst of one of those seasons right now.
In coping with my vertigo, I've developed a unique perspective on my situation. I've come to affectionately call it the "Genie in a Bottle Syndrome." You know, like the genie from the Aladdin tales, except mine isn't granting any wishes. Instead, it barges into my life, disrupting my family time, studio work, and business endeavors. So, I've learned to put that genie back where it belongs – back in the bottle – in order to regain control of my life.
When I'm feeling great, it's easy to forget about the things that keep the genie contained. I become negligent with my balance exercises, forget to stay hydrated, ignore the need for screen breaks, and lose track of time. It's as if I'm inadvertently rubbing that oil lamp and summoning the genie once again. The reality of living with this uncertainty can be disruptive, particularly when the episodes resurface.
This entire experience serves as a powerful reminder to all of us that our art careers rely heavily on the functionality of our bodies. We must take care of ourselves and never take our abilities for granted. Our bodies are the vessels through which our creative expressions come to life, and without them functioning at their best, we face significant limitations.
Whether you're currently enjoying good health or battling your own personal genie, it's crucial to prioritize your well-being. If you find yourself in a healthy state, ask yourself what steps you're taking to maintain it. Are you engaging in regular exercise, nourishing your body with healthy foods, and practicing self-care? Remember, prevention is key.
On the other hand, if you're in the midst of an illness, like me with my vertigo, it's essential to listen to your body's needs. What do you require in order to aid your body's healing process? It might be seeking medical advice, exploring alternative therapies, or simply giving yourself the time and space to rest and recuperate. Remember, your well-being is just as important as your creative pursuits.
As artists, we have the power to transform our struggles into sources of inspiration. By openly discussing our challenges and sharing our journeys, we create a supportive community that understands the unique hurdles we face. Let's talk about our experiences, lend an ear to one another, and provide the encouragement and understanding that can make all the difference.
Let's embrace our struggles, knowing that they don't define us but rather shape us into the resilient and inspiring individuals we are. Remember, our bodies are the tools through which our creativity flows, so taking care of them is paramount. Prioritize your well-being, whether you're currently healthy or battling your own personal genie.
Let's continue to create, support, and inspire one another, building a community that thrives on compassion and understanding. Together, we can navigate the challenges, break down barriers, and create art that truly resonates with the world.
